of John Proctor, everything that he does is in attempt regain the trust, approval and unconditional love of his wife Elizabeth. She is not a character with strong conviction, and in the course of the play, she changes sides to whichever will keep her safe from harm at the time. Proctor deducts from the events that Mary Warren and Abigail, the lead conspirator, are in cahoots in trying to kill Proctor s wife by accusing her of witchcraft. Proctor denies being a witch until the day of his death. Abigail feared for her life so much that she protected it even when John was accused of witchcraft and was sentenced to be hung. Proctor decided to admit his sin in attempt to taint Judge Danforths trustingly blinded opinion of her, hoping in turn that the judge would reconsider the validity of Abigails claims, resulting in the release of his wife.
